'You laugh at me because I am different. I laugh at you because you're all the same.'

A discussion arose this weekend when family members saw my tattoo and one asked; ‘what if you go to a job interview and have to shake someones hand?’ Well I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it but then it made me think, why are tattoo’s and piercing so frowned upon? I think theyre gradually becoming more and more acceptable, especially to the younger generation but still, I know my mum and dad would have paid money for me not to have mine done. My mum did admit that she was expecting it to be worse and a lot more ‘in your face’ but still confessed to not seeing my desire in getting one. It really sucks that were brought up to accept some things as being acceptable, and some as out of the ordinary. I mean, as a world, were well and truly based on key ways in which we are to think; what’s beautiful, what’s wrong, what’s correct. I mean, what is the big deal about tattoos and piercings? They’re a way of expressing yourself, just like people dying their hair, wearing make up or changing clothes. Some might say that tattoos and piercings look untidy and unprofessional. But why? Because at some point somewhere, someone deemed them to be that way? We strive to portray ourselves as being independent so maybe it’s about time some people learnt to think for themselves and not conform to the stereotypical ways of the past.
